“One, two, three!” Faro shouted and he and Axelsson both pressed down on Joe’s other pauldron to lock it in place. “My word, it is seriously a rather…antiquated piece of tech, isn’t it?”

Joe nodded and tapped the glass on his helmet. “Yeah. It came from the antique vault, after all. My HUD says everything is in place. I appreciate the help.”

“And you know how to use the armor lock, right?” Aran asked as she dug her helmet out of the crate.

He nodded. “Yeah, but Buddy will handle it. He insisted and since he dies if I die, I decided I’d let him.”

“Buddy?” Ben asked as he slid a pistol into a compartment on his leg plates. “That’s the designation you gave your AI?”

Joe shrugged as he opened his crate of weapons. “Well, he gave it to himself, technically. I merely rolled with it.” He took the shotgun out and placed it in a rack on the back of his waist. “Yours is named Vera, right?”

The other man nodded and stowed several explosives in the other compartment on the opposite leg. “That is correct.”

“What about you, Axelsson? Have you given yours a name, yet?” he asked as he secured the blaster on his back.

“Aia—the same front to back,” she replied and checked the sights on her rifle. “It constantly bothered me for one and that was the best I could think of at the time.”

“They like having an identity don’t they?” Joe commented, opened the compartments on his leg plates, and placed a hand cannon in one before he filled the other with cartridges of ammo. “How much longer until we reach the planet?”

“Vera?” Ben called.

“I was about to inform you that we have only seconds to exit warp,” she said and her voice filtered through the intercom. “Please brace for warp escape.”

Aran caught hold of one of the pillars in the hanger. “Don’t worry,” she assured her team leader when she saw his alarmed expression. “Leaving warp is not as bad as going into it.”

Joe grasped another pillar. “Hey, I think I’m ready for it now, but we’ll soon see. That first one was merely a new experience. Not that I think new experiences are bad.”

Faro sat on one of the benches and strapped himself in. “Not at all. I think we are all about to experience something new as we will land on a planet that none of us have been to before.”

The Marine sighed. “You ruined the innuendo, pal.”

Ben tilted his head. “I ruined what?” Joe didn’t get a chance to reply as the ship began to decelerate rapidly. The two standing reached out to stop their crates from sliding along the floor while Faro merely stretched his leg out to catch his. Once they came out of warp, a monitor appeared in the room to display the planet in front of them.

“Be advised, Komran ship energy signatures confirmed near extraction site,” Vera told them briskly.

“Well, I certainly didn’t think they came all this way to give their guys a lift home.
